The Salix funding stream for individual academies, academy sixth form colleges and free schools as well as Multi-Academy Trusts in England is now open for new applications. The funding is called Salix Energy Efficiency Fund (SEEF) and the funding window is now open until 11th January 2021.

What is SEEF?

This is a government-funded scheme that helps with the upfront cost of installing energy efficiency measures that will result in reduced energy bills. This is an interest-free loan that will be repaid through the energy bill savings made so not only will you have no upfront cost, you will have no additional monthly costs as a result of the loan. And at the end of the loan term, you will benefit from the energy bill savings long term.

So, the key benefits are:

  •       You will benefit from reduced energy bills
  •       No upfront costs
  •       Interest-free loan
  •       Repayments should not exceed your energy bill savings so no additional monthly costs
  •       Energy-efficient improvements will improve the learning environment

What are the criteria?

Each school or college can only make one application, but this can be for multiple energy efficiency measures within the school. Multi-Academy Trusts can submit one application per academy in the trust.

Loan amounts must be between £8,000 and £200,000 but the project can be part-funded through a different funding mechanism. The key to the SEEF loan is that the loan amount can’t exceed an eight-year payback period, which means the anticipated energy bill savings must be able to repay the loan within eight years. It must not also exceed £222 per tonne/CO2, which we can calculate for you.
